Whether you are working on your stock 1985 Corvette or your modified 1994 convertible its is very important to have a reliable straight forward repair manual to help you understand repair steps to follow quickly and easily. Not all repair manuals are created equal. Below is my review of the top three, well four. Starting with my top pick.

• Pros –

  • Very good trouble shooting processes

• Cons –
  • Sometimes hard to find depending on year (be sure you are ordering your correct year)
  • Can be expensive and price varies
  • Books are very large (900 pages)
• Price – $35 – $85 depending on version

2. Chevrolet Corvette (84-96) Haynes Repair Manual (USA)

• Ranked second.
• Product Description – Each Haynes manual is written for the do-it-yourselfer and provides step-by-step instructions based on a complete disassembly of the vehicle.  This hands-on experience provides the reader with specific and detailed instructions for performing everything from basic maintenance and troubleshooting to a complete engine overhaul.
• Pros –
  • Works best for general views
  • Best for minor repairs and maintenance
  • Detailed in certain areas like engine work
  • Some good pictures
• Cons –
  • Does not cover ZR-1’s
  • Seems more focused on earlier C4’s
  • Not all areas detailed as others
  • Not sure which year is being referred to sometimes. 
• Price – $35-$55

3. Chiltons General Motors Corvette: 1984-96 Repair Manual

Each manual contains: trouble codes, electronic engine controls, maintenance schedules, diagnostic charts, wiring diagrams, tune up specifications, and much more.
• Pros –
  • Inexpensive
  • Easy to read and understand
  • Some very good pictures
• Cons –
  • Electrical section for the dash isin’t presented in a very clear manner
  • Not sure which year is being referred to sometimes.

4. Chevrolet Chevy Corvette C4 Complete Workshop Service Repair Manual 1984-1996

• I show this as #4 but it may or may not be. I haven’t personally used this manual. I plan to purchase it in the future but as of this post I have not. I may move up on rankings once it gets reviewed. There are several reviews on their website. I would suggest taking a look at those

  • Covers all years of the C4 Corvette.
  • Relatively low price
  • Instant access after purchase
  • Can access it from computer, tablet or phone at any time.
• Cons –
  • Odd descriptions. Heading says it only goes through 1994 but the description says to 1996.
  • Starts with the year 1983, we all know there was no 1983 Corvette
• Price – $30-$35

In conclusion, one of the most important tools you can own is a good repair manual. A good manual can save you time and money doing any car repair project. There are 4 manuals discussed above but to me the clear winner is the CORVETTE FACTORY REPAIR SHOP & SERVICE MANUAL used by Chevrolet mechanics when C4 Corvettes were new. Some of the others mentioned will work for some general repairs but for the best most detailed information the Factory manuals cannot be beat.
